CSA and roadside inspections
See your public FMCSA CSA data and roadside inspections, link them to your drivers and vehicles, track DataQs challenges and get alerts on new inspections.
What the CSA pages are for
The CSA pages show what the FMCSA publishes about your company, in one place, and connect it to your own drivers and vehicles. They answer: how are my BASIC measures looking, which roadside inspections did we get, which violations were written, which of them are ours, and which should we challenge?
Everything comes from your USDOT number (set in Settings). Without it the pages ask you to add it first.
Open them from Safety > CSA & roadside in the left rail (the pages also have tabs at the top):
| Page | What it shows |
|---|---|
| CSA | BASIC measures and thresholds, out-of-service (OOS) rates against the national averages, recent inspections, data freshness and Refresh now |
| Inspections (menu: Roadside inspections) | Every roadside inspection of the last 24 months, with violations, vehicle and driver matches |
| DataQs challenges | Violations you marked to challenge and their status |
| Crashes | Crashes on your record from the public crash data |
Note: CSA & roadside inspections is an optional feature. If the pages are missing from the menu, the feature is not turned on for your company. Ask your platform admin or check your plan.
Where the data comes from
EZ Logs reads the open data that the US DOT publishes on data.transportation.gov. It is the same public data behind the FMCSA SMS website.
- SMS input files: inspections, violations, crashes and the carrier census. Updated monthly, covering 24 months.
- SMS results: your BASIC measures. Updated monthly.
- MCMIS daily inspection file: inspections that happened since the last monthly SMS run. These show up within a few days, but have no severity weights and no BASIC yet. They get both after the next monthly SMS run.
Driver names and license numbers are not in the public data. EZ Logs works out the driver as described in Linking inspections to your vehicles and drivers.
The demo company shows sample data so you can explore the pages.
What is public and what is not
- Property carriers: since the FAST Act of 2015 the FMCSA does not publish your BASIC percentiles or alert status. EZ Logs shows the measures, your inspections with their violations and the acute/critical indicator.
- Passenger carriers: percentiles and alerts are public and are shown.
- Crash Indicator and Hazardous Materials Compliance BASICs are not public for any carrier. They are labelled Not public. View in the FMCSA Portal. Log in to the FMCSA Portal with your own account to see them and your percentiles.
Reading the CSA page
- Go to CSA.
- The BASIC list covers Unsafe Driving, Hours-of-Service Compliance, Vehicle Maintenance, Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Hazardous Materials Compliance, Driver Fitness and Crash Indicator. Each shows its measure and, where public, its percentile against the intervention threshold.
- Intervention thresholds depend on your carrier type:
| BASIC | General | Passenger | Hazmat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsafe Driving, HOS Compliance, Crash Indicator | 65 | 50 | 60 |
| Vehicle Maintenance, Driver Fitness | 80 | 65 | 75 |
| Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Hazmat Compliance | 80 | 80 | 80 |
- The OOS rates compare your driver, vehicle and hazmat out-of-service rates with the national averages (driver 6.67%, vehicle 22.26%, hazmat 4.44%, as of 09/25/2026 per the FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot). Driver inspections are levels 1, 2, 3 and 6; vehicle inspections are levels 1, 2, 5 and 6.
- Links next to the data open your company in SMS, SAFER, the FMCSA Portal and DataQs.
How fresh is the data
- The data is cached in EZ Logs. When you open the CSA page and the data is older than 24 hours, it refreshes automatically.
- Refresh now (owners and carrier admins) fetches it again. It can be used once every 15 minutes.
- The government publishes monthly and daily files, so there is always a lag. A very recent inspection can be missing for a few days, and it appears without severity or BASIC until the next monthly run.
- If a refresh fails, EZ Logs keeps the previous data and tries again later. The page shows when the data was last updated.
Inspections and violations
- Go to CSA > Inspections.
- Filter by period, vehicle or driver match, DataQs status or OOS, and open an inspection.
- The detail shows the report number and state, date, level, location, units inspected (VIN, plate), OOS results and each violation with its code, description, BASIC, severity weight and whether it is an OOS violation.
Linking inspections to your vehicles and drivers
EZ Logs matches each inspection automatically.
Vehicles are matched by VIN, a VIN that differs by one character, the last 8 characters of the VIN, or plate and state.
Drivers are matched from, strongest first:
- The CDL number (and state) or the name you recorded from the paper report.
- ELD sign-ins on that vehicle on that day (the only driver signed in, or one of several).
- The only driver assigned to that vehicle.
Each match has a confidence. A high confidence is linked automatically. A lower one is shown as a suggestion for you to confirm. Weak signals are not shown.
To fix or confirm a match, open the inspection and:
- Pick the correct vehicle or driver (a manual link; manual links are never overwritten by later refreshes).
- Select Not ours when the inspection is not yours.
- Select Reset to automatic to go back to automatic matching.
- Under Driver from the inspection report, record the driver's name and CDL number and state from the paper report. This gives the strongest match.
Where linked violations appear
- When you open a driver (Drivers) or a vehicle (Vehicles), under Roadside inspections.
- On the Safety scorecards, as roadside counts. In Safety settings you can set the Roadside severity weight, the points deducted per roadside violation severity point. The default 0 means roadside violations are shown but do not change the score. See Safety.
- Coach driver on a violation sends a coaching note to the driver's app feed.
Tracking DataQs challenges
DataQs is the FMCSA system for challenging data you believe is wrong. EZ Logs only helps you keep track internally. It does not file anything. File the request yourself at dataqs.fmcsa.dot.gov.
- Open an inspection and mark the violation To challenge.
- As you work on it, change its status: To challenge, Submitted, Accepted, Rejected or Withdrawn.
- Add notes and the DataQs request number you received.
- Review everything in CSA > DataQs challenges.
Alerts for new inspections
With the Alerts feature on, add these rule types (see Alerts and geofences):
- New roadside inspection: with a minimum number of violations and an optional BASIC filter.
- Out-of-service order: for driver, vehicle or hazmat OOS orders.
Rules are checked whenever the CSA data refreshes. The first load of your history never alerts, and only inspections from the last 45 days can alert.
EZ Logs Fleet app
The EZ Logs Fleet app shows a read-only CSA summary and your recent inspections under More > CSA.
Who can do what
- Owner and Carrier admin: everything (refresh, link, record the driver, manage DataQs tracking).
- Support (read-only): sees every page with the data from the last refresh; actions (including refresh) are hidden.
- While your portal is read-only (see Billing and trial), actions are disabled for everyone; the data still refreshes when you open the CSA page.
