Reading your HOS clocks

What the Drive, Shift, Break and Cycle clocks on the HOS tab mean, and how violations are shown.

For drivers Español

The HOS tab shows how much time you have left under the federal hours-of-service rules for property-carrying drivers (49 CFR 395.3). The clocks are worked out on the phone from your own log, so they keep counting without a data connection.

The four clocks

ClockRuleWhat it shows
Drive11-hour driving limitDriving time left before you must take 10 hours off duty.
Shift14-hour windowTime left in your 14-hour on-duty window. Driving is not allowed after the window ends.
Break30-minute breakDriving time left before you need a 30-minute break (required after 8 hours of driving). Shows break satisfied once you have taken it.
Cycle60 hours / 7 days or 70 hours / 8 daysOn-duty time left in your cycle. Your carrier sets which cycle you are on.

The large number at the top is the clock that runs out first (for example drive time left). While you drive it also shows the time to stop by; when the time is running low it changes to Plan to stop by and the header turns to a warning colour.

How the clocks count

  • Off duty, Sleeper and Personal conveyance count as off duty.
  • Yard move counts as on duty, not driving.
  • 10 consecutive hours off duty (off duty, sleeper or both) resets the Drive and Shift clocks.
  • 34 consecutive hours off duty restarts the cycle.
  • The sleeper berth split (at least 7 hours in the sleeper paired with a rest of at least 2 hours) is taken into account automatically.

Violations

If you go over a limit, a card shows Violation: with the rule you went over (11-hour driving limit, 14-hour window, 30-minute break or cycle limit). The violation stays on your log; your carrier also sees it in the portal.

Important: the clocks are a guide based on your recorded log. You are responsible for following the hours-of-service rules. If your log is wrong, correct it (see Edits and edit requests) and the clocks are worked out again.

Other things on the HOS tab

  • Today's totals: time in each duty status for today's 24-hour period, in your home terminal time zone.
  • Co-driver: team driving status (see Team driving).
  • Trailer & shipping doc: the trailer and shipping document numbers that go on your logs (see Trailers).
  • Vehicle inspection (DVIR): whether today's pre-trip inspection is done (shown when your carrier uses DVIR).
  • Fuel purchase: add a fill-up (shown when your carrier uses IFTA).

While the truck is moving, the screen shows only the clocks and the status buttons are locked. They unlock when the truck stops.
