Changing your duty status

How to set Off duty, Sleeper, Driving and On duty, how automatic driving works, and what the stop prompt means.

For drivers Español

Your duty status is recorded on the HOS tab. Change it every time your activity changes (49 CFR 395.8). Driving is recorded automatically from the truck's movement.

The duty statuses

ButtonDuty statusUse it when
Off dutyOff dutyYou are relieved of all work.
SleeperSleeper berthYou are resting in the sleeper berth.
DrivingDrivingSet automatically when the truck moves.
On dutyOn duty, not drivingYou are working but not driving: fueling, loading, inspections, waiting at a shipper.

Change your status

  1. Stop the truck. Status buttons are locked while the truck is moving.
  2. On the HOS tab, under Change status, tap the new status.
  3. If the app has no valid location, it asks for Your location: type the nearest city and state (5 to 60 characters) and tap Save.

The button of your current status shows Current and how long you have been in it.

Automatic driving

  • When the truck goes faster than 5 mph, the app records Driving on its own. You do not need to tap anything.
  • You can't shorten or change automatically recorded driving time.
  • If you tap Driving yourself, the app asks Set Driving manually? first, because driving is normally recorded automatically.

The stop prompt

When you are in Driving and the truck has been stopped for 5 minutes, the app asks Vehicle stopped:

  • Tap Still driving if you are only stopped briefly (for example in traffic).
  • Tap On duty to switch to on duty, not driving.
  • If you don't answer within 1 minute, the app records On duty.

After that, change to Off duty or Sleeper yourself if you are taking a break.

What if

  • The ELD is not connected: you can still change status. The status strip shows ELD not connected; connect it on the ELD tab as soon as possible. If the truck moves while the app is not connected, the PT30 keeps the data and sends it when it reconnects; the late data can add driving to your log and log a data diagnostic (see Malfunctions and data diagnostics).
  • You picked the wrong status: correct it on the Log tab (see Edits and edit requests). Edits need a reason.
  • You are offline: status changes are saved on the phone and uploaded later.

For personal use of the truck and moves in the yard, see Personal conveyance and yard moves.
