Vehicle inspections (DVIR)
Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports, record defects with photos, and review the previous report before driving.
A driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) records the condition of the truck and trailer. In EZ Logs you fill it in, sign it on the screen and it is sent to your carrier (49 CFR 396.11 and 396.13). DVIR is available when your carrier has turned it on.
Open DVIR
- More > Vehicle inspection (DVIR), or
- the Vehicle inspection (DVIR) row on the HOS tab. It shows Due when there is no pre-trip inspection today and Done after you complete one.
Fill in an inspection
- Tap Start pre-trip inspection or Start post-trip inspection. You can also switch between Pre-trip and Post-trip at the top of the form.
- Check the details:
- Power unit: your truck (choose None (trailer only) to inspect only a trailer);
- Trailer number(s): separate several with commas;
- Odometer (mi) and Location.
- Go through each item in the checklist (brakes, steering, lights, tires, coupling devices and so on). Each item has an OK / Defect choice and starts as OK.
- For a problem, tap Defect on that item. In the dialog:
- Describe the defect;
- add photos with Camera or Gallery (optional);
- tap Save defect (or No defect to undo).
- Under Summary, add Remarks if needed.
- Set Vehicle is safe to operate. Defects that affect safe operation must be repaired before driving (396.11(a)(3)).
- Under Sign, type your full name in Driver name and sign on the signature pad.
- Tap Sign and submit.
The report is saved on the phone and sent when online. Reports waiting to be sent show Not sent yet.
Review the previous report before driving
If the last report for your truck listed defects, you must review it before you drive (396.13).
- After you sign in, the app opens Review previous DVIR automatically. The HOS tab shows "Review and sign the previous DVIR before driving" until you do.
- The report shows the defects, photos and, if your carrier has dealt with them, the repair status (Defects corrected or Defects need not be corrected, certified by your carrier).
To sign the review:
- Read the report and the carrier's repair certification.
- Under Your review, type Your name and sign.
- Tap Sign review.
If repairs are not certified yet ("Repairs not certified by the carrier yet"), contact your carrier before driving.
My reports
The DVIR screen lists your reports under My reports with their status: No defects, Defects open, Repaired or No repair needed. Tap one to see the full report.
What if
- You are offline: you can complete and sign the inspection; it uploads later.
- "Type your full name to sign." / "Sign the report on the signature pad.": the name or signature is missing.
- "Select a vehicle or enter a trailer.": choose a power unit or type a trailer number.
