Personal conveyance and yard moves
How to start and end personal conveyance (PC) and yard moves (YM), and when the app ends them on its own.
Personal conveyance and yard moves are special driving categories. The truck moves, but the time is not recorded as driving. You can only use them if your carrier has turned them on for you. If not, the HOS tab shows "Personal conveyance and yard moves are not enabled by your carrier."
| Category | Recorded as | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Personal conveyance (PC) | Off duty | Moving the truck for personal reasons while off duty, for example from the shipper to a nearby rest area or to a restaurant. |
| Yard move (YM) | On duty, not driving | Moving the truck inside a yard, terminal or shipper's lot. |
Follow FMCSA guidance and your carrier's policy on when PC is allowed. PC can't be used to move a load further along the trip.
Start personal conveyance or a yard move
- Stop the truck. The buttons are only shown while the truck is stopped and no special category is in effect.
- On the HOS tab, under Change status, tap Personal conveyance or Yard move.
- Type an optional Comment (optional) (for example "To truck stop for rest") and tap Start.
Starting PC sets your status to Off duty; starting a yard move sets it to On duty. A card shows PERSONAL CONVEYANCE in effect (or YARD MOVE in effect) while it lasts.
End it
- Stop the truck and tap End personal conveyance (or End yard move) on the card. The button is disabled while the truck is moving.
- It also ends when you change duty status or sign out.
When the app ends it for you
- Yard move:
- ends when the engine is shut down or the ELD powers off and on again;
- ends, and Driving is recorded, when the truck goes over your carrier's yard move speed cap (20 mph unless your carrier sets another). This is controlled by the End yard move above speed cap setting in More > Settings (on by default).
- Personal conveyance:
- after the engine is restarted, the app asks Continue personal conveyance? Tap Continue PC to keep it or End PC to end it. If you don't confirm before the truck moves, PC ends and the movement is recorded as driving.
- Either category ends if your carrier turns it off for you. If the truck is moving at that moment, the movement is recorded as Driving.
What the log shows
While PC is in effect, the location on your log is recorded with reduced precision (coordinates rounded to one decimal, roughly a 10-mile area) and odometer and engine hours are left blank, as the ELD rule requires. The roadside display shows PC and yard move time so an officer can see it.
Note: if you use PC or a yard move by mistake, correct the record on the Log tab with a reason. See Edits and edit requests.
