HOS violations and compliance status
Find hours-of-service violations, drivers running out of time, uncertified logs and ELD malfunctions from the dashboard, the Drivers page, alerts and reports.
Where violations show up
EZ Logs calculates hours-of-service (HOS) clocks and violations on the server from each driver's ELD records, using the cycle rule set in Carrier settings (70-hour / 8-day or 60-hour / 7-day). The browser never estimates them. You see the results in four places:
| Where | What you get |
|---|---|
| Operations > Dashboard | Live counts, the Needs attention list and per-driver clocks and violations |
| Drivers & fleet > Drivers | A Violations column and a Violations only filter |
| Operations > Alerts | Alerts raised by your HOS rules (optional Alerts feature) |
| Insights > Reports | The HOS violations, Driver hours and Log certification reports (optional Reports feature) |
The violation types are the 11-hour driving limit, the 14-hour window, the 30-minute break, the Cycle limit and, for short-haul drivers, the Short-haul 14-hour limit.
Use the dashboard
- Open Operations > Dashboard. It refreshes every 30 seconds; select Refresh to update it now.
- Check the tiles at the top:
- HOS violations: number of violations and how many drivers have them.
- Drivers at risk: drivers with less than 1 hour of driving or shift time left.
- Unidentified driving records, Pending edit requests, Days needing certification, Days needing recertification, Active malfunctions and Active diagnostics. Select a tile to go to the page where you can act on it.
- Work through Needs attention, sorted by severity. Each violation row shows the driver, unit and how long the limit was exceeded (for example "11-hour driving limit exceeded by 0:15"). Select Open log to see the driver's day.
- In the Drivers table, the clock columns show the time left (drive, shift, cycle and break) and the Violations column lists each violation with how far over it went. Hover over a violation to see when it started and ended.
Important: If the HOS engine is unavailable on the server, the dashboard says Hours-of-service clocks are unavailable and shows a dash instead of counts. Do not rely on the screen for HOS compliance until the clocks return. Duty statuses and records are still current.
Find drivers with violations
- Open Drivers & fleet > Drivers.
- Select the Violations only filter chip.
- Go to Compliance > Driver logs and open the driver's log to review the day.
Fixing the cause
A violation is a fact of the driver's records; you cannot clear it. What you can do:
- If a record is wrong (for example a forgotten duty status change), propose a correction from the driver's log. The driver must accept it in the ELD app before it counts. See Driver logs and edit requests.
- Uncertified days: drivers certify their own logs in the app (49 CFR 395.30(b)). Remind the driver; days edited after certification must be certified again.
- Malfunctions and data diagnostics: the Active malfunctions and diagnostics list on the dashboard links to the driver's log. See ELD malfunctions for what the driver must do.
- Changing the cycle rule or day start time in Carrier settings recalculates every driver's log days, clocks and violations, including past days.
Get notified
With the optional Alerts feature, create a rule on Operations > Alert rules:
- HOS time running out: when drive, shift, break or cycle time drops below a threshold.
- HOS violation: when a violation occurs (any type, or only the ones you pick).
Both can also notify the driver in the ELD app. See Alerts and geofences.
Report on violations over time
With the optional Reports feature, open Insights > Reports and choose HOS violations (per driver, with a weekly trend), Driver hours or Log certification. Export to CSV or PDF, or schedule the report. See Reports.
