Safety events, coaching, scorecards and the accident register
Review speeding and harsh driving events, coach drivers, track safety scores and keep the 49 CFR 390.15 accident register.
What the Safety pages are for
The Safety section turns vehicle speed and device data into safety events (speeding, harsh braking, harsh acceleration, harsh cornering and detected crashes), gives you a review and coaching workflow, ranks drivers and vehicles on a 0 to 100 safety score, and keeps the accident register that carriers must maintain under 49 CFR 390.15.
Open it from the Safety icon in the left rail. The section has five pages:
| Page | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Safety overview | Key numbers for the last 7 and 30 days, events per day, and the drivers with the most events |
| Safety events | The events inbox: review, coach or dismiss |
| Scorecards | Driver or vehicle leaderboard per week or month, with trends |
| Accident register | Accidents of the last 3 years, with attachments and CSV export |
| Safety settings | Detection thresholds and the score weights |
Note: Safety is an optional feature (Safety). If you do not see the Safety icon, the feature is not turned on for your company. Contact EZ Logs support to enable it.
Who can do what
- Owner and Carrier admin: everything (review, coach, dismiss, record accidents, change settings).
- Support (read-only): sees every page, but all actions are hidden.
- While your portal is read-only (for example after a subscription problem, see Billing and trial), actions are disabled for everyone.
- Drivers see only their own events, coaching notes and score in the ELD app, can acknowledge coaching with a comment, and can report an accident from the app (it arrives as a draft for you to review).
How events are detected
- Speeding: vehicle speed (engine ECM speed, else GPS speed) above your Speeding above (mph) threshold for at least For at least (seconds). Severity is set by how far the peak was over the threshold.
- Harsh braking and harsh acceleration: reported by the device, or derived from speed changes when samples are at most 2 seconds apart (about 1 sample per second).
- Harsh cornering and Crash detected: reported by the device only. A detected crash is always high severity.
- The driver of an event is the driver signed in on the ELD app when it started. Events without a signed-in driver show Unknown.
Important: The PT30 sends periodic data about every 10 seconds, which is too coarse to see a harsh event from speed. With the PT30 you get speeding events plus any harsh events and crashes the device reports itself. The Safety settings page shows this note at the top.
New events can take a few minutes to appear. When detection is still catching up, pages show a note such as "Detection is still running for 3 vehicle-days; numbers may still grow."
The safety overview
Go to Safety > Safety overview. The tiles show:
- Events, last 7 days and Events, last 30 days (select a tile to open the matching events).
- Events per 1000 mi over 30 days (dismissed events excluded).
- Fleet score over 30 days (higher is safer).
- Coaching backlog: new events to review, how many are high severity, and how many coached events the driver has not acknowledged yet.
- Accidents, last 365 days, how many are DOT-recordable, and driver drafts waiting for review.
Below the tiles, Events per day charts the last 30 days by type (Show the numbers opens the same data as a table), and Most events per 1000 mi lists the drivers with the highest rates. All scorecards opens the scorecards.
Reviewing and coaching events
- Go to Safety > Safety events. By default the Status filter is To review (new): your coaching backlog.
- Narrow the list with Status, Type, Severity, Driver, Unit, From and To. Select Clear to reset the filters. Use Load more events at the bottom for older events.
- Select the event type badge in a row to open the event. The detail page shows:
- a Map of the vehicle track from 60 seconds before to 60 seconds after the event, with the event segment highlighted;
- a Speed chart with the speeding threshold;
- the Event facts (source, driver, vehicle, start, end, duration, peak, threshold, location), with Driver log and Vehicle shortcuts.
- In the Review panel, choose one of:
- Mark reviewed: you looked at it; no coaching needed.
- Coach: enter a Coaching note first (required). The note is shared with the driver: they get a notification, see it in the ELD app and can acknowledge it with a comment. To change a note later, edit it and select Update coaching.
- Dismiss: a false positive or not relevant. Dismissed events are excluded from scores.
- Reopen: puts a reviewed, coached or dismissed event back to New.
- Optionally add Internal notes. They are only for your team and never shown to the driver. On a reviewed event, Save notes saves note changes.
After coaching, the Driver acknowledgement box shows "Waiting for ... to acknowledge in the app" until the driver acknowledges, then the acknowledgement time and any comment.
Note: You cannot coach an event that has no driver (nobody was signed in). Coached events cannot be dismissed.
Dismissing several events at once
- On Safety events, tick the boxes of the events (or the box in the header to select all that can be dismissed).
- Select Dismiss selected at the bottom of the table.
- Optionally enter an Internal note (optional), then select Dismiss events.
Coached or already dismissed events are skipped, and the confirmation tells you how many.
Scorecards
Go to Safety > Scorecards.
- Choose Drivers or Vehicles.
- Set Period to Week (Monday to Sunday) or Month (calendar month). Use the arrows to go to the previous or next period, and This week / This month to come back.
- The leaderboard shows Rank, Score, Trend (versus the previous period), Miles, events per 1000 miles for each type, and Speeding (percent of driving time spent speeding). The Fleet row is at the bottom.
- Select a name to see its score over the last 12 periods in the trend panel. Show fleet switches back to the fleet trend.
How the score works:
- Score = 100 minus (each type's weight x severity points per 1000 miles) minus the speeding time weight x percent of driving time speeding, limited to 0 to 100.
- Severity points: low 1, medium 2, high 3. Dismissed events do not count.
- Bands: 85 and above is good, 70 to 84 is fair, below 70 is poor. The number is always shown next to the colour.
- Below the Minimum miles for a score in the period, the subject shows Not scored.
Accident register (49 CFR 390.15)
Motor carriers must keep an accident register for 3 years after each accident (49 CFR 390.15(b)). Go to Safety > Accident register.
An accident is DOT-recordable (49 CFR 390.5) when there was a fatality, an injury treated away from the scene, or a vehicle towed from the scene because of disabling damage. EZ Logs shows a live DOT-recordable or Not recordable badge as you fill in the form.
Recording an accident
- Select Record accident.
- Fill in Date and Time (home terminal time), City, State (two-letter code), Address or road, and optionally Latitude (optional) and Longitude (optional).
- Choose the Driver and Vehicle (or leave Not recorded).
- Enter Fatalities and Injuries treated away from the scene, and tick A vehicle was towed from the scene (disabling damage) and Hazardous materials were released (other than fuel from the vehicle's tanks) if they apply.
- Add the Police report number, Insurance claim number and What happened.
- Set Status to Open (being handled) or Closed, then select Record accident.
From a Crash detected event, Record accident on the event page opens the same form prefilled with the time, place, driver and vehicle.
Reviewing a driver's report
Drivers can report an accident from the ELD app. It arrives as a Draft and a banner shows how many reports are waiting.
- Select Review on the draft row.
- Check and complete the details.
- Select Review and open (or Review and close if you set the status to Closed). The report becomes an entry of the register.
Attachments, filters and export
- Open an accident (select its date, or Edit / View) to manage Attachments: choose a Kind (Photo, Police report, Insurance, Other), pick Files (PDF, JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC, up to 15 MB each) and select Upload. You can open, download or remove each file.
- Filter the register by Status, DOT-recordable, From and To.
- Export CSV downloads the register with the current filters, for audits and insurers.
- Up to the newest 500 accidents are listed; narrow the dates to see older ones.
Important: Accident register entries cannot be deleted. They are kept for 3 years as 49 CFR 390.15(b) requires. Removing an attachment does not remove the accident.
Safety settings
Go to Safety > Safety settings. Defaults are shown in brackets.
| Section | Field | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Speeding | Speeding above (mph) (70) | 30 to 100 |

Select Save settings. Events of the last 90 days are re-checked in the background with the new thresholds, so counts and scores can change for a few minutes.
Related alerts
With the Alerts feature also on, you can add an alert rule of type Safety event that fires for new events of chosen types at or above a severity, and resolves when the event is reviewed, coached or dismissed. See Alerts and geofences.
